Building Code Compliance: It's Not an Option, It's the Law

Building codes are established by state & local governments to safeguard the public's interest with regard to building construction, and are generally concerned with basic structural and fire safety aspects. While there are more than 40,000 different government jurisdictions in the United States that enforce building codes, these government agencies generally adopt a model code into the state civil code or local ordinances, but not always. In some areas, additional requirements are enacted to provide increased protection for buildings in regions that are prone to severe weather, such as tornadoes and hurricanes.

In addition to local building code, other agencies and organizations publish design guidelines to address specific concerns. For example, the FEMA 361 Design and Construction Guidance for Community Safe Rooms offers a tremendous resource for design and testing criteria for buildings that may serve as a community shelter.

Your Stamp, Your Seal, Your Problem

It is ultimately the professional responsibility of the design professional of record to review and approve any products or systems to be used on a project. With your seal and your signature, you assume personal professional liability for ensuring compliance.

At IMETCO, your reputation - and your time - is as important to us as it is to you. Our engineers are here to help you understand not only the code requirements, which generally only establishes minimum requirements for construction design and installation, but to determine whether or not your structure needs to exceed the minimum code requirements to ensure proper performance.

Contact our engineering team for help specifying or selecting a code-compliance metal system, or to request an on-site, AIA accredited presentation.
